This is a two-piece aluminium-plated steel firing pan, includes a container and lid, and holds both carbon and metal clay pieces.
This pan fits the Super Petit electric kiln. Use the pan directly inside the chamber without a fibre board or shelf.
With multiple firings, the pan’s aluminium plating will oxidise and darken, protecting the steel core from corrosion.
Use this firing pan to fire Art Clay Copper and Art Clay Bronze. Copper clay can be, and bronze clay must be fired under carbon to generate a reducing atmosphere and avoid difficult-to-remove firescale on your fired pieces.
To prepare the carbon for use:
- Place it inside the container, cover with the lid and fire for 30 minutes at 840°C.
- Cool completely.
Follow the Art Clay Copper and Art Clay Bronze firing schedule. These carbon-firing schedules are 2-staged:
(Be aware that the standard firing schedule for Art Clay Copper is single-staged.)
- Oxidising fire at a lower temperature than sinter to pyrolyse the organic binder (produces some smoke).
Note that your piece will be quite fragile at this stage. - Sintering fire at a higher temperature buried under carbon with the lid on to sinter the metal powder in the absence of oxygen.
Acid-washed coal-based carbon creates a variable and colourful patina on pieces as they are fired. Coconut shell-based carbon produces a cleaner, satin finish.
Any patina may be removed by pickling, sanding or wire-brushing.
Firescale can be removed by filing, sanding, tumbling, pickling or abrading with a Scotch-Brite (or similar like a wire brush) pad or wheel or buffing accessory.
Internal dimensions: 83 mm (L) x 60 mm (W) x 48 mm (H)
External dimensions (including lid): 101 mm (L) x 76 mm (W) x 56 mm (H)
Always test fire with a scrap piece of fully dried clay to check for potential sinter failure before firing your piece.
Always handle hot pans with care – use kiln tongs to remove items from your kiln to a flat refractory/fireproof surface to cool like an alumina block, refractory soldering board, vermiculite board, or a kaolin fibre board.
